Answering Your Frequently Asked Questions
A comprehensive eye examination includes an assessment of your vision, prescription, eye coordination, focusing ability, eye pressure, and overall eye health. The doctor will also evaluate the front and back of the eyes for signs of eye diseases and systemic health conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
Retinal imaging captures detailed digital photographs of the back of the eye, including the retina and optic nerve. These images, along with OCT (optical coherence tomography), help detect and monitor eye conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and retinal abnormalities.Â
While retinal imaging may not be mandatory for every patient, it is strongly recommended as it provides valuable documentation and can assist with early detection of eye disease.
Dilation may be recommended depending on your age, symptoms, medical history, and the doctor’s findings during the examination. Dilating eye drops temporarily enlarge the pupils to allow a more thorough evaluation of the internal structures of the eye.Â
Most patients can still drive afterward; however, vision may remain blurry and light-sensitive for several hours. We recommend bringing sunglasses and arranging transportation if you are uncomfortable driving after dilation.
Dilating eye drops allow the optometrist to obtain a clearer and wider view of the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels inside the eye. This helps with the early detection and monitoring of conditions such as retinal tears, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration.
Coverage for eye examinations depends on your provincial health coverage and eligibility requirements. In Ontario, annual comprehensive eye exams are generally covered by OHIP for seniors aged 65 and older for eligible eye health services.Â
Additional testing or services may not be covered. Our staff would be happy to review your coverage with you prior to your appointment.
A comprehensive eye examination includes your glasses prescription. A contact lens prescription and fitting assessment may require additional measurements and evaluation to ensure proper fit, comfort, and eye health.Â
Additional fees apply for contact lens fittings and evaluations; a current wearer’s renewal is $55, and new evaluations start at $125.
Yes. We are able to directly bill many major insurance providers. Please bring your insurance information to your appointment, and our team will assist you with the claims process.Â
Coverage varies depending on your individual plan.
Children can have their first eye examination at 6 months of age, and annually thereafter, unless otherwise recommended by the optometrist. Regular eye examinations are important for detecting vision problems that may affect learning and development.
Most patients adjust to new prescription glasses within a few days to two weeks. Certain prescriptions, including progressive lenses or significant prescription changes, may require a longer adaptation period.Â
If discomfort or vision concerns persist beyond two weeks, we recommend returning for an adjustment or reassessment.
The number of IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments varies depending on the severity of your dry eye condition and your individual response to treatment.Â
Most patients begin noticing improvement after 2 to 4 sessions, with a series of treatments often recommended for optimal results. Your optometrist will create a personalized treatment plan based on your symptoms and clinical findings.
