Relieve Dry Eyes and Rejuvenate Your Skin

We use the Cynosure Icon™ IPL device to deliver targeted treatments that rejuvenate your appearance and refresh dry eyes.

IPL can be used to reduce the look of wrinkles, fine lines, rosacea, and pigmentation, as well as address the root cause of chronic dry eye. Using target wavelengths of light, IPL penetrates deep into the skin to address cosmetic concerns or restore healthy tear production.

What Is IPL?

Intense pulsed light therapy, or IPL, is a noninvasive treatment that uses light energy to heat your skin and rejuvenate your cells. The light waves penetrate deep into the skin, which targets your specific skin concerns.

IPL can be used to treat a variety of aesthetic concerns as well as chronic dry eye.

What Does IPL Treat?

IPL delivers pulses of light to the target area, helping your body to get rid of unwanted or damaged cells. After the treatment, your body will heal with a more even skin tone and texture, noticeably reducing the appearance of scars, pigmentation, wrinkles, sun damage, broken veins or capillaries, and rosacea.

Additionally, IPL can be used to permanently remove unwanted hair and treat styes or chalazia around the eyes. Chalazia are uncomfortable bumps on your eyelid that usually result from a blocked meibomian gland and contain hardened oils that can be liquefied and cleared using IPL.

IPL can also be an effective treatment for dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction, ocular rosacea, and blepharitis. The light waves gently heat the meibomian glands to melt oil blockages and reduce inflammation in the eyelids. This helps restore the oil layer of the tear film to slow evaporation and keep your eyes feeling moist and refreshed.

What to Expect During an IPL Treatment

Depending on the reason for your treatment, the exact placement and timing of the treatment may vary. In general, you can expect these steps to be followed:

  • Before starting the treatment, your medical aesthetician will place protective goggles over your eyes.
  • A gel will be applied to the area that will receive IPL treatment.
  • The IPL device will be placed on the skin in the treatment area.
  • The IPL device may cause a mild stinging sensation, like snapping a rubber band or a slight pinch. Your medical aesthetician will communicate with you throughout the procedure to make sure you’re comfortable.
  • If you receive IPL to treat meibomian gland dysfunction, your practitioner may perform a manual gland expression afterward. They’ll massage your eyelids with a small amount of pressure to remove any remaining oils and stimulate healthy oil production.

After the treatment, your skin may look red or pink. It may feel similar to a mild sunburn, so we recommend using a moist cloth or cool pack to soothe sensitive skin. These effects tend to last for about 4 to 8 hours, but may vary from person to person.

Following aesthetic treatments, you may notice some immediate improvements to skin tone and texture. We will recommend a series of treatment sessions depending on your target area.

If you are receiving IPL for dry eye symptoms, we usually recommend between 4–6 sessions over 8 weeks for lasting relief and improved tear production.
