The Silent Thief of Sight

Glaucoma causes damage to the optic nerve, which can lead to blindness. It is sometimes referred to as “the silent thief of sight” because it often develops gradually and without symptoms.

Regular, comprehensive eye exams are vital to check for signs of glaucoma, such as increased eye pressure or gradual loss of peripheral vision. Glaucoma can be managed through medication or treated with surgery in more severe cases. Early detection and management of glaucoma is crucial to reducing the risk of vision loss.

If you have been diagnosed with glaucoma, we can help you manage the condition. Book your appointment with Thornhill Vision Care to give your eyes the care they need.

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve, which can result in blindness. There are several types of glaucoma.

Open-angle glaucoma accounts for about 90% of all cases. It develops slowly and painlessly, caused by a buildup of internal pressure that damages the optic nerve.

Glaucoma can also be caused by eye trauma and occur suddenly. Any sudden changes to your vision should be treated as an emergency. Contact us immediately.

How We Detect Glaucoma

During your eye exam, we will check for glaucoma through a variety of diagnostic tests. We use applanation or non-contact tonometry instruments to check your intraocular pressure (IOP), or internal eye pressure. This alerts us to any increase in pressure that could damage your vision.

We also use visual field testing to assess your visual field. More commonly referred to as peripheral vision, your visual field includes the entire area you can see without moving your eyes from a fixed central point. The test measures how far up, down, left, and right you can see without moving your eyes. It also measures how sensitive your vision is in different parts of your visual field.

Glaucoma can cause a gradual loss of peripheral vision. By testing your visual field during each exam, we can use an objective measurement of your visual field and catch changes over time.

Finally, we’ll use retinal imaging and OCT scans to get a complete picture of the health of your retina and optic nerve. These scans provide high-resolution images that will show if the optic nerve has been impacted by glaucoma.

These diagnostic tests are important tools to screen for glaucoma and to assess the efficacy of your treatment plan after diagnosis.

Our Glaucoma Management Methods

Glaucoma management will vary depending on what type of glaucoma you have and how advanced it is during your diagnosis. For many people, medications are a great option to reduce internal eye pressure and manage glaucoma.

Medication for glaucoma is usually administered as eye drops directly to your eyes that help reduce eye pressure. We’ll recommend an eye exam schedule tailored to you to help manage and monitor your eye health during treatment.

In some cases, medication may not be sufficient. In this situation, we will work together with a local ophthalmologist to provide surgical care to reduce your eye pressure. While the procedure will be performed by the ophthalmologist, we will be there to guide and assist you through the pre- and post-operative processes.
