Care for Your Eyes with Thorough Exams

Comprehensive eye exams are a key practice in preventive health care. Not only are eye exams necessary to make sure your eyesight is crisp and your glasses or contact lenses are providing you with the sharp vision, but they are also important for monitoring your overall health.

Comprehensive eye exams evaluate the health of your eyes, including internal structures like your blood vessels and optic nerve. Our well-educated team is here to monitor your healthy vision and provide support when needed.

At Thornhill Vision Care, your health is our top priority. We spend extra time and attention with each patient to thoroughly evaluate their eye health at each exam.

How Often Should I Have an Eye Exam?

We recommend that most adults have an eye exam every 1 to 2 years. Adults living with diabetes, other systemic health concerns, or a predisposition for eye disease should have more frequent eye exams. After your first eye exam, we will recommend a schedule tailored to you.

Children have their own recommended eye exam frequency.

What to Expect During an Eye Exam

When you first arrive at our practice, you’ll be welcomed by our friendly team. If you’re new to our clinic, we’ll ask you some questions about your health history, lifestyle, and current medications.

Your eye exam will begin with pre-testing. This stage includes digital imaging, which captures photos and scans of different parts of your eyes. We’ll also check your eye pressure, colour vision, and peripheral vision.

During your exam with your optometrist, your visual acuity will be measured to check if your prescription needs to be updated. Your optometrist will also examine how well your eyes work together and check for any signs of eye disease.

The exam takes around 45 minutes. If you need new glasses or would like to book a contact lens fitting, this will happen after your exam time.

Dry eye, also known as ocular surface disease, is an uncomfortable condition caused by problems with your tear film. It’s a common condition that affects many Canadians. Typically, your eyes will feel gritty, scratchy, or irritated and may appear red; however, some people experience fewer symptoms or have grown used to them.

Over time, dry eye can cause damage to the surface of your eye. To protect your eyes, we provide a dry eye screening during all adult eye exams. We’ll check your tear film to make sure it’s healthy. If we discover any issues, we’ll discuss next steps with you during your exam.

We don’t dilate pupils for every eye exam, but sometimes it’s necessary to get a better view inside the eye. If we determine that dilation is necessary, we will apply dilation eye drops to your eyes. The eye drops widen your pupils so it’s easier to see the inside of your eye.

Dilation can make your eyes more sensitive to light for a few hours. We recommend bringing sunglasses to your appointment and planning not to drive for a few hours until your pupils return to normal. If you have questions about dilation for an upcoming appointment, please contact us.

Maintain Healthy Vision with Preventive Care

The first step to maintaining healthy, clear vision long-term is preventive health care. Booking regular, comprehensive eye exams allows us to monitor your eye health and catch signs of eye conditions, such as dry eye, or eye diseases, such as glaucoma, before you notice impacts to your vision.

Maintaining a regular eye exam schedule is important for preserving the health of your eyes and overall well-being. Because of their in-depth analysis of your eyes, optometrists can be the first to notice symptoms of health concerns such as high blood pressure, heart disease, brain injuries, and certain cancers.
