Clear Vision, Glasses Free

Contact lenses provide options for people who require vision correction. Whether you’re interested in going glasses-free for sport, fashion, or comfort, we can assist your contact lens journey. With proper education and support, even children can wear contact lenses safely.

Contact lenses are medical devices. They sit directly on your eye, so it’s important to select quality lenses properly fitted for you. To maintain safe wear and care of contact lenses, the College of Optometrists of Ontario recommends that lenses be worn only under the care of a qualified and licensed eye care professional.

We can assist you with all your contact lens questions and needs. We offer standard and specialty contact lenses to help you find the right fit. Book your contact lens exam today.

What Is a Contact Lens Exam?

A contact lens exam is the first step before wearing contacts for the first time, or switching lenses to a new prescription or style.

The exam includes assessing your contact lens-specific prescription, measuring your eyes, and determining which lens style will fit your vision and comfort needs. Because contacts sit directly on your eye, a proper fit is important for your eye health.

Contact Lenses for Kids

We can fit contact lenses for kids as well. For many children, contact lenses offer freedom to be active without worrying about their glasses. They may also prefer the discreet look of contact lenses or the option to switch between glasses and contact lenses, depending on the activities or events of the day.

We can fit children with contact lenses as young as 5 years old. Whether or not your child is ready to wear contact lenses depends more on their unique traits than their age. If contact lenses are of interest to your child or teen, or if we are looking at myopia control options, we can discuss whether they are ready for the responsibility of wearing contact lenses.

During their contact lens exam and fitting, we will also teach you and your child how to care for their new lenses.

MiSight 1 day lenses are daily disposable contact lenses specifically designed to help slow the progression of myopia in children.

These contact lenses use two treatment zones that correct nearsightedness for clear vision and slow the progression of myopia. During a three-year clinical study, MiSight 1 day lenses reduced the rate of myopia progression by 59% on average, compared to a standard, single-vision lens.

Ortho-k contact lenses are worn overnight so you can go lens-free throughout the day. They work by gently reshaping your cornea, the clear front part of your eye, while you sleep. Sometimes ortho-k lenses are referred to as orthodontics for the eyes, as they gently adjust the curvature of your eyes to give you clear vision.

Ortho-k lenses can also be a great option for children needing myopia control. If your child doesn’t want to wear glasses or contact lenses during the day, or participates in activities such as swimming, where corrective lenses pose a challenge, ortho-k can be a great fit.

Specialty Contact Lenses

In addition to standard soft contact lenses, we also offer a variety of specialty contacts to fit your unique needs. Depending on your prescription, eye conditions, such as dry eye or keratoconus, and vision problems, like presbyopia or astigmatism, a specialty contact lens may provide clearer and more comfortable vision than standard soft contacts.

During your contact lens exam or even during your comprehensive eye exam, we can discuss the contact lens options we recommend based on your eye health, prescription, and other factors. You’re welcome to bring any questions you have about contact lenses to your appointment. We’re happy to answer them!

Rigid gas-permeable contact lenses are firm, durable contact lenses made of oxygen-permeable material that allows your eyes to “breathe”. They also deliver sharper vision in contrast to standard soft contact lenses. They can provide clearer or more comfortable vision for those with astigmatism and keratoconus.

RGP lenses are made of a more durable material, meaning they have a longer life span. RGP lenses need to be cleaned carefully with contact lens solution each night.

Multifocal contact lenses contain two or more powers or prescriptions within a single contact lens. This allows wearers to switch between near and distant activities, such as searching for directions, then driving to their destination, without changing lenses or needing reading glasses.

We can fit multifocal contact lenses for all ages.

Scleral contact lenses have a larger diameter, which allows them to sit on the sclera or the white part of your eyes and vault over the cornea without touching it. A saline solution is placed inside the scleral lens before inserting it to provide clear vision and continuous moisture for your eye throughout the day.

Scleral lenses can be a good fit for those with irregular corneas that may have found other contact lenses uncomfortable. As they cover a large portion of your eye and contain saline, scleral lenses are also a good option for people suffering from dry eye, especially those with aqueous-deficient dry eye, such as individuals with Sjogren’s Syndrome.

Toric contact lenses have a unique shape that looks more like a slice of a donut than part of a sphere. Toric contact lenses create different focusing powers on vertical and horizontal orientations, helping to correct for astigmatism.

If you have astigmatism and find that standard lenses aren’t giving you the vision you want, let us know. We can explore if toric lenses may be the right fit.

Caring for Contacts

Contact lenses sit directly on your eye, so it’s important to follow all the directions from your optometrist carefully. By following these instructions and caring for your lenses, your eyes will stay comfortable, and you will significantly reduce the risk of infection caused by contact lens wear.

For children and teens, daily disposable lenses may be preferable. That reduces the risk of infections, as the lenses are worn only once. Daily disposable lenses may also be preferable if you only wear contact lenses occasionally.

Regardless of what type of lenses you choose, these are some of the general guidelines to follow to keep your eyes healthy:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water, and dry thoroughly before inserting or removing your contact lenses
  • Remove your contact lenses before going to sleep (except for ortho-k)
  • Book annual, comprehensive eye exams to check on your eye health with daily contact wear
  • Avoid showering, swimming, or going in a hot tub while wearing contact lenses
  • Follow your optometrist’s instructions regarding care and replacement of your lenses
  • If you have reusable contact lenses, only use the recommended contact lens solution to clean them; never use tap water

If you use disposable lenses and require a refill of your current prescription, you can reorder them online.

Finding Your Fit

A contact lens exam is an important part of the contact lens process. A thorough exam provides accurate vision correction and a comfortable fit.

Don’t be shy to share your feedback during the fitting process. Contact lenses can take some time to get used to, whether they are completely new to you or you’re switching to a new style like RGP from soft lenses. Your feedback will help your optometrist determine whether you’re just adjusting to the new lenses or if the fit needs to be tweaked for comfort.
